Stress – everyone’s stressed aren’t they? It seems to be an inevitable part of life, but it doesn’t have to control you. Coming from a fast-paced busy corporate job, I understand and have experienced the detrimental effects that stress and burn out can have on your mental and physical health. It wasn’t necessarily the job itself, but the immense pressures I would put on my own shoulders that caused the stress. But like many of us, I wasn’t kind to myself and I just lived with it. Stress, self-doubt and anxiety became a normal feeling and dominated my life, whether I realised it or not.

And then the real shocker came. I came across an article online one day which said it was medically proven that stress causes 75% of all illness. What?! Three quarters of all illness attributed to being stressed! All to do with the body being out of balance while trying to regulate the adrenalin and stress hormones constantly flowing through the body. Usually in a traditional ‘fight or flight’ situation, it’s temporary and our body goes back to normal quite quickly. However, when we’re in a state of constant stress, it knocks our body out of kilter for much longer and eventually our body adjusts to living in an unbalanced state leading to a higher chance of illness.
Given this terrifying statistic, I knew I had to find a way to unwind and reduce my stress levels. One of the most effective and enjoyable ways that I found to combat stress was through therapeutic massage and other holistic therapies, particularly Aromatherapy. It had such a profound effect on me that I have gave up my corporate life to study and pursue a career in aromatherapy, and other therapies such as reflexology, so I could help others who were in similar situations that I had been in.
So, given my experience, and knowing that you, my former colleagues, family and friends are in similar situations, I want to explore in this article how I believe aromatherapy massage can help you find tranquillity and reclaim your inner peace.
The Science Behind Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage is a fusion of two powerful techniques: aromatherapy and massage therapy. Essential oils, extracted from plants, are used for their therapeutic properties. When these oils are inhaled or absorbed through the skin during a massage, they work on the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls emotions and memory which can significantly influence your mood and stress levels.
The massage itself helps to release tension in the muscles, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Combining these two therapies amplifies the benefits, making aromatherapy massage a potent tool for stress relief.
Essential Oils: Nature’s Stress Busters
Different essential oils have unique properties that can help reduce stress. Here are a few of my favourites:

Lavender: Known for its calming effects, lavender oil can reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
Bergamot: This citrusy and slightly floral oil has uplifting properties that can alleviate stress and promote a positive mood.
Clary Sage: This herby oil contains compounds that can calm the nervous system, helping reduce stress and anxiety
Melissa (Lemon Balm): This sweet, lemony oil improves mood and has been used for centuries to treat anxiety and disorders of the nervous system.
Peppermint: Although more invigorating, peppermint oil can help clear the mind and relieve stress-induced headaches.
These oils are blended with a carrier oil, such as almond or coconut oil, and used during the massage to enhance its stress-relieving effects.
How Aromatherapy Massage Alleviates Stress
There are many ways that aromatherapy massage can aid stress relief. Here’s how it works:
Promotes Relaxation: The rhythmic comforting massage techniques combined with the soothing scents of essential oils help to calm the nervous system, leading to deep relaxation. Many of my clients enter such a state of relaxation during their treatments that they drop off to sleep!
Reduces Anxiety: Aromatherapy massage can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increase serotonin and dopamine levels, which are neurotransmitters that promote happiness and well-being.
Improves Sleep: Stress often disrupts sleep patterns. The relaxing effects of essential oils like lavender can improve sleep quality, making you feel more refreshed and less stressed.
Enhances Mood: The uplifting properties of certain essential oils like Sweet Orange, Geranium, and Clary Sage can help improve your mood and make you feel more positive and energised.
Eases Physical Discomfort: Stress often manifests as physical tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders. Aromatherapy massage can help release this tension, reducing physical discomfort and promoting overall well-being.

Whether it’s once a week, bi-weekly, or monthly, regular sessions can help manage stress and prevent it from building up. Additionally, incorporating essential oils into your daily life—using them in diffusers, baths, or personal care products—can extend the stress-relieving benefits between massages. I’ll be posting a blog dedicated to using Aromatherapy at home in the very near future, so keep an eye out for that.
